FACTORY SCOUTING REPORT Baltimore, MD PUMA National Tournament Team Tryout
EVENT DATE: 5/15/2005
LOCATION: Baseball Factory Field, University of Maryland – Baltimore County
The word of the day was defense. Each of the top five prospects graded out better in the field than at the plate. It was a pleasure to watch a ground ball fielded correctly, quick first steps and routes in the outfield, and an 86mph arm on the mound. As the old saying goes…”defense wins championships”…
The Top 5 Prospects were picked by Jake Weber (Assistant Director of Instruction) and Buddy Custer (Underclassmen Exclusive Director) based on their performance at the event. The ranking is based on their status as college prospects, and is relative to the entire group of 2006 graduates we saw on the day (underclassmen are not considered).
Top 5 Prospects (2006 graduates)
1. Drew Lydon, SS – White Plains, MD (Riverdale Baptist HS), 6-0, 170, R/R. A two sport high school athlete (also football QB); where he controls the offense, but on the baseball field he is a defensive specialist. He has an athletic body with foot speed (7.18 60yds.) arm strength, and soft hands in the infield. The most room for improvement can be made at the plate, once he gets his timing and rhythm down he will be a complete player at the college level.
2. Ryan Smith, C – Waldorf, MD (Westlake HS), 6-2, 205, R/R. A big strong catcher who oozes potential. He has the tools that cannot be taught (arm strength and power); with a little work on fundamentals his game will be complete. His best tool is arm strength (86mph and 2.01-2.11 pop times), with carry and life out of hand. His power numbers are better than overall hitting right now, timing effected consistency but he showed plus bat speed.
3. Kevin Fisher, SS – Abingdon, MD (Bel Air HS), 5-10, 180, R/R. A three tool player with foot speed (6.93 60yds.), arm strength, and power. He has an athletic body and it is no surprise he plays four positions on the football field which require foot speed and athleticism (CB, WR, PR, and KR). He has a loose wrist when throwing, the ball has life and carry out his hand. At the plate he has a quiet upper body and will improve quickly with a better load.
4. Aaron Main, RHP/SS – Brunswick, MD (Brunswick HS), 6-2, 190, R/R. An arm strength guy on the mound, threw 86 mph with a sharp breaking ball. He gathers well and showed good balance; once he gets a feel for a consistent change-up he will be a tough arm to face. He used his foot speed (7.09 60yds) and athleticism to play SS; where he had good hands and a quick exchange. He also brought a level stroke with plus barrel contact to the plate.
5. Andrew Kriss, OF – Forest Hill, MD (John Carroll HS), 5-11, 165, R/R. Our best all around athlete of the day is a four sport high school athlete (also football WR/DB, basketball G, and track jumper/ sprinter). He is a fast twitch fielder who showed a good drop step and proper routes to track fly balls. He also showed plus arm strength with plenty of carry and backspin on throws. The area for improvement is at the plate, a better load and separation will enable him to maximize his plus bat speed and balance.
