FACTORY SCOUTING REPORT Lake Worth, FL B.A.T.S. Video Scouting Session & PUMA National Tournament Team Tryout

EVENT DATE: 6/16/2005

LOCATION: Palm Beach Community College

Since our last Factory Scouting Report (6/15 Erie, PA) our scouting staff has been on the road almost non stop. At this point in the summer, we get on flights, rent cars, check into hotels, wake up early, go to ballparks, find baseball players…then do it all over.

Our Player Development staff is on the road as well. We recently completed our Omaha Weekly Pro Training event where the players combined a full week of instruction, drills, and competition with a few trips to see College World Series games. Our teams also finished up their week at the USA Junior Olympic Tournaments, one team in the East event and one in the West event.

As you will see below, our Top 5 from Florida is loaded with Catchers. We also had a very good group of runners on the day. The best time was turned in by 2006 graduate Corey Douglas (Pahokee, FL / Pahokee HS), who ran 6.53 in the 60 yard dash.

Top 5 Prospects (2006 graduates)

The Top 5 Prospects were picked by Andy Ferguson (Director of Scouting) based on their performance at the event. The ranking is based on their status as college prospects, and is relative to the entire group of 2006 graduates we saw on the day (underclassmen are not considered).

1. Michael Demma, C – Coral Springs, FL (Highlands Christian HS), 6-0, 170, R/R. A polished, well above average defensive Catcher. Showed ability to receive, block and throw all with advanced ability. Release times were between 2.03 and 2.15, and his arm checked in at 86 mph on the radar gun. His footwork had some size, but had great rhythm – exchange was a little balky during the workout. He showed some quickness in his stroke, and hit the ball hard the other way. Kept his hands and barrel inside the ball well – stroke was sound and compact.

2. Trey Cherry, C/OF – Middleburg, FL (Middleburg HS), 6-0, 205, R/R. Cherry is a strong bodied, athletic catcher with an above average bat. He ran 6.81 in the 60 yard dash, and showed near well above average power – especially to the right center field gap. He showed above average bat speed, and the ball jumped off his bat. His release times were 1.98 – 2.12, mostly from a quick exchange. His defensive fundamentals can improve greatly, he gets by on athletic ability now. May also be used in the OF, as another way to get his bat in the lineup.

3. Frank Santos, RHP/OF – Miami, FL (Miami Christian HS), 5-9. 175, R/R. A potential 2-way player at the college level. Topped at 91 mph on the radar gun to test his arm strength, and then topped at 89 mph on the mound. He also showed feel for an 11 to 5 shape curveball (69-73 mph) and a change-up (78 mph) with sink. He ran 7.21 in the 60 yard dash and was solid during his outfield workout. At the plate he got the good part of the bat on the ball during BP, and showed above average bat speed. When he let the ball travel deep enough he drove the ball to the gaps.

4. Brett Chamberlain, C – Chipley, FL (Vernon HS), 6-1, 182, R/R. Chamberlain was the best catch and throw guy on the day. His times were between 1.91 and 2.01, his exchange was super quick and he showed an above average arm (84 mph) despite gaining little ground with his footwork. His hands were good to receive, and quickness stood out during his blocking workout. He showed a very quick bat at the plate and hit the ball very hard occasionally. His barrel accuracy can improve, tended to reach out front and got under a lot of balls. He has plenty of ability to work with, we really liked his upside.

5. Micheal Mesa, OF – 2005 graduate, Pembroke Pines, FL (Hollywood Christian HS), 5-7, 150, R/R. A quick twitch athlete – ran 6.75 60 yard dash, 4.37 home to 1B, and showed a short and quick stroke at the plate with above average bat speed. He was aggressive through the zone and hit hard line drives with backspin, kept his stroke level and in the zone very well when he got to his front side. His outfield actions were fluid, and he maintained his body control very well. He touched 75 mph on the radar gun with a stiff arm action, arm would be playable in left or center field.
