Former Baseball Factory Stars Shine on College Baseball’s Biggest Stage

Jay Cox – University of North Carolina, 6’1″ 190lbs.

An alum of Baseball Factory, Jay participated in the Rookie Program and was selected as a Baseball Factory All-American. The Tar Heels reached the College World Series championship series for the first time in school history thanks in part to Jay’s outstanding play. In their semifinal series against 2004 National Champion Cal State Fullerton, Jay had a pair of clutch home runs along with a game saving catch in the ninth inning to help the Tar Heels win 6-5 and advance to the championship round. Although the Tar Heels did not win the National Championship, Jay went 4-12 (.300) scoring three of the 13 total Tar Heel runs. During his senior season Jay batted .375 with 65 RBI’s, second on the team. Jay was a powerful and intimidating hitter slugging a team best .634 and leading the team with 15 home runs. Jay is looking to play in the majors after being drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the 22nd round.

Greg Buchanan – Rice University, 5’11” 180lbs.

The Rice Owls have a legacy of breeding strong baseball players. The Owls were the 2003 National Champions and this year they had another remarkable run. The Owls reached the semifinals of the College World Series where they fell to eventual champions Oregon State University. Greg had a very impressive collegiate career playing for three schools: Alvin Community College, University of Houston, and finally Rice where he batted .346 and had 42 RBI’s in 2006. He also started all 70 games during the Owl’s season. Greg was awarded the Most Outstanding Player award for the All-Silver Glove Series where he batted a Ruthian .391. Not only was Greg a clutch hitter, but he also had only one error in 147 defensive chances in 2005, giving him a .993 fielding percentage. Greg, a second baseman, was drafted by the Houston Astros in the ninth round. Greg participated in the Baseball Factory BATS Program to assist him in the college recruiting process.

Chris Perez -University of Miami, 6’4″ 225lbs.

Much like Greg and Jay, eventual champions Oregon State knocked out Chris’ Hurricanes. Chris, the youngest of our star watch players, is the undisputed closer of the Miami team. Chris boasts a 9-2 career record with 19 saves (over two seasons). He also had the teams lowest ERA at 1.79 while appearing in the most games out of any pitcher in 2006. Chris frustrated batters holding them to a .177 batting average. The St. Louis Cardinals recently selected him in the first round of the Major League Baseball draft where he was the 42nd overall pick. Chris participated in the Baseball Factory Exclusive College Recruiting Program and was also an All-American with the Baseball Factory.
