Four 85+ mph Fastballs in Hightstown, NJ

Four pitchers reached at least 85 mph on Sunday March 8, with two topping at 86 mph and another just one tick off at 84. Velocity was the theme of the day as the Under Armour Baseball Factory Tryout Tour rolled through Central New Jersey, with a stop at the Ian H. Graham Athletic Center on the campus of the Peddie School in Hightstown.

6-foot-1, 190 pound, 2016 RHP Matt Stoots (Pembertown Township – Browns Mills, NJ) topped at 86 mph with his two-seamer, and worked 83-85 with his four-seamer. The two-seam version had late arm side run, while his mid-60s breaking ball lacked consistency but showed potential.

A year younger and two inches taller at 6-foot-3, 2017 RHP Jarrad Delarso (Cherokee HS – Marlton, NJ) also ran his fastball up to 86 mph. His breaking ball was in the mid-to-upper 60s with 10-to-4 action from his three-quarters arm angle, and he showed the makings of a solid changeup with cut action in the low-70s.

By far the most physical of the arms at 6-foot-5 and 235 pounds, 2016 RHP Zachary Amisano (Shawnee HS – Medford, NJ) worked in the 84-85 mph range with his four-seamer. His two-seamer was a few ticks below the four-seam version, and had slight arm side life. Though he did not workout defensively at this event, he appears to have some two-way potential based on the raw power he showed in batting practice.

2016 SS/RHP Tyler Fischer (Holmdel HS – Holmdel, NJ) was among the most capable all-around players at the event. His fastballs were 84-85 with slight arm side life, and he featured promising off-speed pitches. His breaking ball had tight 11-to-5 action up to 77 mph, while his changeup was thrown with good arm speed and had gradual sink in the 78-79 mph range. Both secondary pitches were around the plate, as was his fastball.

Fischer has a mature, well-proportioned frame at 6-foot-1 and 205 pounds, and posted the only sub-seven 60 yard dash on the day at 6.97. Not surprisingly, raw power received the highest marks of any of his tools. He generated hard contact more based on strength than on pure bat speed, though he did work the barrel quickly to contact a direct route. Defensively, he showed the ability to generate momentum through his play on the ball, along with the ability to translate that into strong, accurate throws.

Not to be outdone, 2016 1B/LHP Ian Scheuer (Middletown South HS – Lincroft, NJ) turned in an equally impressive two-way performance. Standing a physical 6-foot-2 and 200 pounds, he posted a respectable 7.09 in the 60 yard dash and topped at 82 mph with his fastball. He threw strikes across the board with a solid three-pitch mix, and has some future value on the mound — but he will likely become a secondary pitcher in the future.

Scheuer was easily the top offensive performer on the day, featuring near top of the scale bat speed along with standout left-handed raw power. His raw power marks were higher than those given for hitting ability, but not my much — few, if any, holes were evident during his batting practice. Also a sure handed defender at 1B, he appears more likely for a future position player role based on his performance at this workout.

The lone sub-two second pop time was posted by 2016 C Zach Schild (Lincroft, NJ), a high school teammate of Ian Scheuer at Middletown South. Schild recorded times between 1.96 and 2.03, and featured well-rounded defensive ability. His receiving and blocking skills were advanced, and he drove his throws down and through the bag. A right-handed hitter, he featured a coordinated move that led to equal marks for hitting ability and raw power. His stroke was direct to the ball, and he generated bat speed through contact.

ua-bf-tryoutJust one tick below 85 mph was 2016 RHP Eric Rojas (St. Francis Prep – Queens, NY). He bumped 84 mph with his four-seamer, while his two-seamer had more defined arm side life up to 83. Given better control, he would have turned in the best breaking ball of the day. His mid-to-upper 60s curve had sharp, late downward action — and certainly has potential to develop into a standout offering.

The top raw velocity was turned in by 2017 SS Jason Ortiz (Paramus Catholic HS – Teaneck, NJ) at 84 mph. Ortiz was also among the top infield defenders at the event.
