LSU Commit Trent Vietmeier Up To 89 Again, This Time In Pittsburgh
As a rising 8th-grader at the June 2012 Under Armour Baseball Factory Interactive Video Program in his hometown of Pittsburgh, RHP Trent Vietmeier ran his fastball up to 81 mph. At the time, he was a two-way player with a 6-foot-2, 175 pound frame, a solid glove at third base and a strong right-handed stroke. By the time we saw him again in the fall of 2013 at the Under Armour Futures East Showcase in Jupiter, FL, he had narrowed his focus to pitching, and gained three mph up to 84 mph on the top end of his fastball — even though he was in football shape at the time.
We saw him again in June 2014 at the Under Armour Team One Florida Showcase, where he topped at 89 mph and showed much improved secondary pitches and overall feel for pitching. With his body primed for baseball at that time of year, his delivery was more natural and his arm worked with more looseness and speed from the glove and out front.
The following spring, during his sophomore season at Montour High School, he verbally committed to Louisiana State University. We didn’t see him that year at any of our events, and wouldn’t see him again until the Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout in Pittsburgh on April 3.
Now listed at 6-foot-3 and 195 pounds, he once again ran his fastball up to 89 with some sinking arm side life. He worked between 87 and 89 from the windup, and was 84-86 from the stretch. He showed advanced feel for his 74-76 mph changeup, and spun a 69-71 mph breaking ball.
Vietmeier currently sits among a large group at 89 mph tied for the fourth best fastball velocity in the class of 2017. Though he is just three ticks off the lead at 92 mph, a logjam of nineteen players stands between he and the top spot.
Just two ticks back of Vietmeier at 87 mph were fellow hometown Pittsburgh right-handers 2017 SS/RHP Nick McRandal (Pittsburgh, PA) and 2018 SS/RHP Steven Miller (Pittsburgh, PA). McRandal added a flat low 70s slider and a knuckle ball, while Miller showed present feel for a solid upper 70s changeup along with a promising but inconsistent upper 70s breaking ball. With a top bolt of 87 mph (from the stretch), Miller joined a large group tied for the fourth highest fastball velocity in the 2018 class.
A pair of two-way guys tied for the next best fastball at 86 mph. 2017 RHP/SS Nolan Donley (Canton, GA) added a 7.05 60 yard dash and 87 mph exit velocity to as evidence of his two-way potential. His secondary pitches included an upper 60s breaking ball and a low 70s changeup. 2017 RHP/3B Joshua Lapierre (Sugar Land, TX) spun a quality downer breaking ball with 11-5 shape at 67-69 mph, and added an upper 70s changeup as his third pitch, while his tools as a position player were solid across the board.
6-foot-4, 235 pound LHP/1B Parker Moye (Evadale, TX) was the lone 2019 qualifier, with a 79 mph fastball to make the cut on the number.
