It seems to be a challenge every year to find quality catching prospects who are talented enough defensively to stay at the position at higher levels and can also swing the bat well. In 2017 Under Armour All-American Will Banfield, that challenge is met.
The Vanderbilt commit possesses excellent tools across the board while projecting to stay at that premium position. He is physical and athletic behind the plate with soft, strong hands, outstanding flexibility and big arm strength. His frame should be able to handle the physical demands of the position and his leadership skills are an excellent fit. With times to second base that are consistently in the 1.8s, he should help to control the opposition’s running game.
At the plate, he shows a clean, efficient right-handed stroke with the ability to drive balls out of the ballpark. The impact is loud and consistent. Add into the mix Will’s ability to jump on the mound to close games with a fastball that creeps into the mid-90s and you have a prospect who can do nearly everything on the field.
We are excited to see Will perform on July 29th at Wrigley Field in this year’s Under Armour All-America Game.
