The Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout Tour rolls into Monticello, Iowa this Sunday February 21st to the Eastern Iowa Sports Facility, and as we have seen in the past, the pipeline of talent is evident in the Hawkeye State.

Let’s take a look at some recent Baseball Factory players who have participated in a National Tryout event in Iowa and have gone onto play within the state collegiately as well as participating in a Baseball Factory Player Development event.

Colby Carmichael – Carmichael is a native of Des Moines, IA, and is a 2014 graduate from Des Moines East High School where he garnered First Team All-State and All-Conference honors his junior season. He helped to lead the Scarlets to a conference championship and to the state tournament semifinals during his junior season in 2013.

After attending an Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout in Des Moines in November of 2012, Carmichael was selected to participate at the 2013 Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament where he pitched well in four innings during that weekend, allowing just four hits. He was able to throws strikes and change speeds effectively, running a fastball in the mid-80’s, a curveball that had late action to it and a mid-70’s change-up that was equally as impressive.

Last season, Colby made eight appearances (two starts) for Northern Illinois University as the left-hander totaled 14 1/3 innings pitched in his freshman season. This season, Carmichael has transferred to a school closer to home, as he will play for Iowa Central and the Tritons baseball team.

Chris Halbur – Halbur is a 2013 graduate from Kuemper Catholic High School in Manning, Iowa. During his junior season in 2012, he was named First Team All-District pitcher, First Team Hawkeye-10 pitcher, and First team All-State pitcher. It was an impressive high school career for Halbur, capped by being selected as a three-time All-Conference pitcher and two-time All-State honoree while at Kuemper.

The big right-hander participated in an Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout in Council Bluffs, IA in August of 2012, and after graduation in ’13, decided to stay in state to play at Iowa Western Community College. Halbur pitched exceptionally well for Iowa Western in his two seasons going, 3-1 with a 1.74 ERA with 21 strikeouts in 20 2/3 innings pitched in ’14 and lowering his ERA even further last season to a minuscule 0.60, allowing just one earned run in 15 innings pitched.

Going into his junior season, Halbur will play for the Jackrabbits of South Dakota State University and figures to see action as a setup man in the Jackrabbit bullpen this season.
