Willie Abreu’s Sophomore Season Helps Canes Get Back to College World Series
Headed back to the College World Series for the first time since 2008, the Miami Hurricanes have balance throughout their team to make a run to the Championship series.
One player helping that balance is sophomore outfielder Willie Abreu, a Baseball Factory alum who was named a third-team All-ACC outfielder in 2014 after hitting .277 with eight doubles, starting 59 games – the most for a Cane freshman. This season, he’s followed that up with a .300 batting average, nine doubles, a triple, six home runs and 47 RBI.
Abreu led the way in the series-clinching 10-3 victory over VCU to advance to Omaha by going two-for-three, with two RBI, two runs scored and a solo home run in the ninth inning to put the icing on the cake for Miami.
Defensively, Abreu has been solid for the Hurricanes, not having committed an error all season, recording 106 putouts and eight assists in 114 chances.
Abreu got his start with the Baseball Factory during a Premium Video Program in Delray Beach, FL in 2011, attending Team One South and Futures events in 2011 and was a 2012 Team One Florida Showcase participant, being one of the more looked at talents in Florida, coming out of Mater Academy in Hialeah, Florida.
The Hurricanes face the Florida Gators in an interstate showdown during the double elimination bracket portion of the College World Series. The matchup between the two teams kicks off Saturday, June 13 at 8:00 P.M. EST.
