Twelve Sub-Seven Runners in College Station, TX

On Sunday, May 10 the Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout tour rolled through College Station with a stop at A&M Consolidated High School.

So far in 2015, this makes our third stop in Texas to produce more than seven sub-seven 60 yard dashes:

Top performers by measurable category appear below:

Though the title of this post indicates twelve sub-seven runners, there are actually thirteen. When I initially compiled the list, I accidentally omitted 2016 SS Jackson Adair — who was only four-hundredths of a second off the lead with a 6.76.

As a seventh-grader in August 2011, 2017 C Garrett Fleming (Brazos Christian HS – Bryan, TX) ran 8.69 and posted 59 mph raw velocity. By January 2012 he knocked a tenth off his 60 yard dash and added one mph to his raw velocity, and by September of the same year he was down to 7.84 in the 60 and up to 64 raw velocity — improvements of .85 second and 5 mph respectively.

His 7.17 60 yard dash in May 2015 represented an improvement of more than 1.5 seconds in less than 4 years, while his 79 mph raw velocity marked a  jump of 20 mph in the same period of time.

2016 OF Caleb Jeter posted 7.22 in the 60 yard dash, along with 70 mph raw velocity in February 2014. By November of 2014 he was knocking on the sub-seven door with a time of 7.03, and had gained six mph raw velocity. In May 2015, his 6.97 60 yard dash marked an improvement of a quarter-second in a little more than a year, while his 77 mph raw velocity represented a 7 mph jump.

2017 2B/OF Tyrese Clayborne

Since June 2014, we’ve seen 2017 2B/OF Tyrese Clayborne three times. First, he posted 84 mph raw velocity and ran a 6.78 60 yard dash. About eight months later, in February 2015, he again recorded 84 mph raw velocity and came in with a 6.81 in the 60 yard dash.

Most recently, he nudged his raw velocity up a couple of mph to 86 and ran 6.79 in the 60 yard dash. A right-handed hitter, he has also gained a half-grade on his hit tool since we first saw him.

In February 2014, 2017 SS Nathan Collins posted 75 mph raw velocity and ran 7.35 in the 60 yard dash. By November of the same year he jumped his raw velocity ten mph up to 85, and dropped his 60 yard dash two-tenths down to 7.15.

In February 2015, he grabbed another mile per hour and got his raw velocity to 86. Most recently, in March and again in May 2015, his raw velocity held solid in the 83-86 mph range.

2017 C Kaleb Thompson

Over the course of three consecutive May Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryouts, starting in 2013, 2017 C Kaleb Thompson has shaved three tenths of a second off his low pop time (from 2.3 to 2.0), added nine mph to his raw velocity (from 73 to 82) and has improved his 60 yard by six tenths of a second (from 8.3 to 7.7).

When we saw 2017 C Kyle Harper for the first time in February 2015, he was among the rare athletes capable of posting both a sub-seven second 60 yard dash and sub-two second pop times. His line at that event included a 6.76 60 yard dash, a low pop time of 1.88, and raw velocity of 86 mph.

His line in May 2015 included a slightly worse 60 yard dash (6.88), a slightly better low pop time (1.84), and the same raw velocity (86).

2017 C Kyle Gonzales

2017 C/2B Kyle Gonzales

2017 C/2B Kyle Gonzales posted workout times between 2.02 and 2.22 along with a 7.36 60 yard dash in July 2014. Less than a year later, in February 2015, he shaved roughly two tenths off both his low pop time (down to 1.84) and his 60 yard dash (down to 7.14).

As of May 2015, his low pop time rebounded back up to 2.00 — but he saw his range tighten up, as his worst time checked in at 2.09 (an improvement of over one-tenth of a second on that side of the range in less than one year). His 7.03 60 yard dash marked a one-tenth second improvement in 2015, and a total improvement of more than three-tenths overall.

At the February 2014 Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout in Houston, 2017 C/ 3B A.J. Irvin posted a low pop time of 2.18, along with 78 mph raw velocity and a 7.8 60 yard dash. We saw him later that summer at the Baseball Factory Omaha National World Series where he worked on all facets of his game, and he paid that work off with his performance in May 2015 — he dropped his low pop time down to 2.05, raised his raw velocity to 81 mph, and trimmed almost three tenths off his 60 yard dash.
