2021 Shortstop Prospects From The 2019 Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament
This article focuses on the premium position of shortstops from the 2021 grad class. The talent level is deep and the future is bright with six of the athletes listed below currently uncommitted.
Sean Ambrose | SS | 5’7”/155 | R/R | Monsignor Pace HS (FL) | Florida International
Sean showed quick, lively actions in the infield with sure hands and plenty of arm across the diamond (89 mph raw arm strength). He also has a line drive stroke that used the whole field well.
Cayden Brumbaugh | SS | 5’10”/160 | R/R | Edmond Santa Fe HS (OK) | Uncommitted
Athletic and quick-twitch (6.82 in the 60), Cayden found the barrel consistently at the plate and showed natural actions and feel for the position at SS.
Brock Daniels | SS | 6’1”/170 | L/R | St John Vianney HS (MO) | Oklahoma
Brock has an advanced approach at the plate with a quick, clean left-handed swing and excellent strike zone discipline. He was also solid in the infield and ran a 6.96 with 89 mph raw velo and an 89 mph exit velocity.
Jake Elbeery | SS | 6’2”/205 | L/R | Austin Prep (MA) | Notre Dame
Jake went 2-for-4 with three walks in Arizona thanks to a smooth, sweet left-handed stroke. He’s an advanced hitter with great barrel feel and is a solid defender in the infield.
Dominic Giuffre | SS/2B | 5’8”/152 | R/R | Archbishop Mitty HS (CA) | Uncommitted
Dominic is a solid all-around prospect who plays the game with good energy. His aggressive right-handed swing uses the middle of the field well and he reads and reacts to balls very well at both middle infield spots.
Brennan Holt | SS | 5’9”/148 | L/R | Parkview Baptist HS (LA) | Uncommitted
There’s a lot to like about Brennan’s game. In Arizona, he ran a 6.70 in the 60 that translated to very good range at shortstop to go with soft hands and a big arm (90 mph raw velo). Brennan’s left-handed swing is quick and compact, and he’s disciplined at the plate – getting on base in 5 of 7 plate appearances.
Brennon McNair | SS | 5’10”/160 | R/R | Magee HS (MS) | Uncommitted
Brennon does everything with loose, athletic actions. His swing has rhythm and balance allowing him to spray line drives to all fields. He has life in his body in the infield showing good feet and hands along with a quick release and an accurate arm.
Reese Smith | SS/2B | 5’9”/170 | R/R | Denham Springs HS (LA) | Louisiana-Lafayette
Reese is an excellent combination of high-level tools and feel for the game. He ran a 6.83 in the 60, registered an 87 mph exit velo and flashed 85 mph raw arm strength. He swings with intent and plays defense with sure hands and confidence.
Chase Valentine | SS | 5’10”/135 | R/R | Sandra Day O’Connor HS (AZ) | Uncommitted
The future looks bright for Chase who showed very good barrel accuracy in his loose, natural right-handed swing. He also defends well with life in his body, the ability to pick hops, soft hands and the arm to finish plays (85 mph raw arm strength).
Brayton Wilmes | SS | 6’2”/170 | R/R | Palmer Ridge HS (CO) | Uncommitted
Brayton has a high ceiling with an athletic, lean frame and some impressive measurables (90 mph exit velocity, 87 mph raw arm strength). He has rhythm at the plate with a natural bounce move to put him into position to hit. It’s easy to envision future power at the plate, and he was solid in the infield in Arizona.
