Baseball Factory Alumni On Baseball America’s 2016 Top 10 Prospects List: A.L. East

Baseball America has released their 2016 Top 10 Prospects Index which ranks each major league team’s top players as well as the team’s farm system overall and, again in 2016, many Baseball Factory alumni find themselves as top prospects heading into the season.

Players from across the country have attended Baseball Factory player events, ranging from Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryouts to the Under Armour All-America Game. A total of 82 Baseball Factory alumni across all 30 baseball teams make up the list in 2016.

Each Thursday, we’ll take a look at where our alumni stand according to Baseball America’s rankings, looking back at their Baseball Factory experience and what they’ve done so far during their professional careers.

Rankings are prioritized by Baseball America and numbered 1 through 10 for each team. In our opening preview, we take a look at Baseball Factory’s alumni from the American League East, where a total of 16 players land on this week’s list.

Baltimore Orioles

Hunter Harvey – RHP (BA’s Rank: #2)

For the second straight year, Hunter Harvey lands at No. 2 on Baseball America’s list of Top 10 O’s prospects, looking to build upon a successful 2014 season that was cut short by a flexor mass strain in his forearm and disrupted last season because of assorted injuries and a flexor mass strain flareup in the fall instructional league.

After a mini-camp bullpen session last month in Sarasota, Florida, Harvey appears on track to bounce back in 2016 as potentially the organization’s best pitching prospect. In 2014 with Low-A Delmarva, Harvey made 17 starts, going 7-5 with a 3.18 ERA, striking out 106 batters in just 87 2/3 innings pitched. Harvey was a 2012 Under Armour All-American.

Chance Sisco – C (BA’s Rank: #3)

Sisco moves up one spot from last year’s ranking, poised to remain the organization’s top catching prospect. After a 2014 campaign where he hit .340 in 114 games with Delmarva, he began 2015 at High-A Frederick where he hit for average and power (.297 AVG with 12 doubles, three triples, four homers) and ended the season with a promotion to Double-A Bowie, seeing action in 20 games hitting .257 with four doubles, two homers and eight RBI.

Sisco, who participated in an Under Armour Baseball Factory College PREP event in Azusa, CA in September of 201o, spent time this past Fall in Arizona playing for the Peoria Javelinas, going 14-for-55 with four doubles and four RBI. He was also named a Baseball America High Class-A All-Star last September and will look to bring more to the table in 2016.

Mychal Givens – RHP (BA’s Rank: #5)

The shortstop-turned-right-handed reliever made the transition to pitcher in 2013, quickly rising to Bowie where he began 2015 and quickly became a pitcher on the O’s radar as someone of interest to help a bullpen that was already very good. Givens, always a superb athlete coming up through the ranks, participated in the 2007 Under Armour Southeast Tournament where he reached mid 90’s on the mound and became a prospect to watch. The following year, Givens was selected to be an Under Armour All-American, and, still considered a two-way player at that point, touched 97 MPH on the mound.

Ryan Mountcastle

Ryan Mountcastle

Ryan Mountcastle – SS (BA’s Rank: #8)

Mountcastle checks in at No. 8, less than a year after being drafted by the O’s (36th overall) in the 2015 draft. The 6’3″ short stop was drafted because of his premier bat, bringing power to the O’s organization after his first professional season in which he hit a combined .296 with seven doubles, four homers and 19 RBI in 53 games between the Rookie- Gulf Coast League Orioles and short-season Aberdeen Ironbirds in the New York-Penn League.

His bat played well in Baseball Factory events that the right-handed hitting Mountcastle attended, beginning in June 2012 at the Under Armour Southeast Championships, to the 2013 Under Armour Memorial Day Classic and later, the Under Armour Futures Series East event in Florida in September 2013. After his 2014 Under Armour All-America Game appearance, Baseball Factory Executive Vice President of Baseball Operations, Steve Bernhardt thought highly of his quality bat speed and ability to square up the baseball against good pitching. Mountcastle will look to do more of that in his second pro season.

D.J. Stewart – OF (BA’s Rank: #10)

Stewart was the Birds top draft selection (25th overall) last year as the left-handed hitting Stewart made his pro debut with the Ironbirds when the team started the 2015 season.

After finishing his career at Florida State University with an advanced college bat, the Gainesville, FL native continued to show his penchant for power, smashing six home runs in 238 at-bats. He also had eight doubles and two triples to go with his numbers, but perhaps, one area of his game that will make the O’s happy was his plate discipline. In 62 games last season with the Ironbirds, Stewart walked 23 times and only struck out 52 times. Going back to his junior season with the Seminoles, Stewart drew 69 walks, the most in Division I baseball.

D.J. attended an Under Armour Team One South event in July of 2011.

Boston Red Sox

Andrew Benintendi – OF (BA’s Rank: #3)

Benintendi, an established collegiate bat coming out of the University of Arkansas, checks in at No. 3 on the Red Sox’s list. Drafted seventh overall last year, the 5’10”, 170 pound left-hander ascended quickly up the organizational rank and MLB’s recent Top 10 Outfield Prospects to Watch list has agreed, placing Andrew fifth on the list, just ahead of other Baseball Factory alums (Byron Buxton at No. 1, Lewis Brinson, No. 2 and Austin Meadows, No. 4).

Starting his professional career at short-season Lowell Spinners in the New York-Penn League, Benintendi hit .290 with two doubles, four triples, seven homers, 15 RBI and 25 walks to go along with an OBP of .408 in 35 games. He increased those numbers in 19 games with a promotion to Low-A Greenville to round out 2015, collecting 26 hits in 74 at-bats with five doubles, four homers and 16 RBI.

Despite being drafted just last June, Benintendi could be tasked with the challenge of starting 2016 at High-A Salem with a great blend of plate discipline, pure hitting ability, plus speed and natural abilities in the outfield.

Native of Cincinnati, OH, Benintendi participated in an Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout in Ameila, OH as a junior in high school in June of 2012.

Michael Kopech – RHP (BA’s Rank: #5)

The right-hander from Mount Pleasant, TX was selected 33rd overall by the team in 2014, and after making eight starts that season in the Gulf Coast League with the Rookie-level Red Sox, Kopech made 15 starts (16 appearances overall) for Greenville going 4-5 with a 2.63 ERA, striking out 70 batters in just 65.0 innings pitched.

Kopech attended an Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout in Carrollton, TX in July, 2012 and in 2013 was named an Under Armour All-American. He’ll look to bounce back in a big way in 2016.

Deven Marrero – SS (BA’s Rank: #8)

Marrero lands at No. 8, one spot higher than his ranking at this time last year after getting his first taste of the majors with Boston in 2015.

The talented shortstop from Davie, FL attended an Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout in St. Petersburg, FL in November of 2005, and was a 2008 Under Armour All-America Game participant as a junior before playing collegiately with Arizona State University. Drafted by the Sox in the first round of the ’12 draft, premium defense has been Marrero’s calling card and certainly accelerated his path to the majors.

After hitting a combined .258 with 30 doubles and 59 RBI in 2014, he played 102 games last season with Triple-A Pawtucket before making his major league debut on June 28th. He collected 12 hits in 53 at-bats and hit his first major league home run in Yankee Stadium on September 28th. Marrero made just one error in 22 chances over 99 innings with Boston last season and if he breaks camp with the team this spring, his defense will be relied on off the bench.

New York Yankees

James Kaprielian – RHP (BA’s Rank: #4)

Kaprielian checks in at No. 4, the highest rated Yankees farm pitching prospect, according to Baseball America. Graduating from Beckham High School in Irvine, CA in 2012, James attended the Ryan Lemmon Sophomore Showcase in June 2010 and seven months later, was an Under Armour Pre-Season All-American. He shined brightly on the mound during the event, throwing a high-80’s fastball, complimented with his curve and change-up that he mixed well.

After a career at UCLA that saw him finish fifth all-time in Bruins history in career ERA (2.06) and All-Pac 12 First-Team conference honors as a junior last season, Kaprielian was selected 16th overall by New York and settled into a good groove at short-season Staten Island, pitching to a 2.00 ERA in three starts, striking out 12 batters over 9.0 innings pitched. He’s impressed Yankees officials and manager Joe Girardi so much that both the skipper and opposing teams evaluators think its not out of the question that Kaprielian could see the major leagues at some point in 2016.

Tyler Wade – SS (BA’s Rank: #6)

Wade was drafted in the fourth round of the 2013 Draft out of Murrieta Valley High School in Murrieta, CA and participated in the 2013 Ryan Lemmon Invitational.

Wade spent the entire 2014 season at Low-A Charleston, hitting .272 with 24 doubles and six triples and 22 stolen bases in 129 games. Last season, he made the jump to High-A Tampa where he hit .280 with 11 doubles, five triples, two homers and 31 stolen bases.

The Yankees farm system is loaded with short stop talent and Wade is one of those players. He’ll likely start the season with Double-A Trenton after receiving a quick promotion there to end last year and will be given a full chance to do well over the course of a full season at the Double-A level.

Rob Refsnyder – 2B (BA’s Rank: #7)

Refsnyder attended a National Team Tryout in Southern California nearly 10 years ago in April 2006 and the Laguna Hills, CA native lands at No. 7 for the second straight year on BA’s list. Heading into 2016, the Seoul, South Korea born-Refsnyder will likely have second base all to himself at the Triple-A level this season.

After a solid season at Triple-A Scranton Wilkes/Barre, one in which he hit .271 with 28 doubles, two triples, nine home runs and 56 RBI in 117 games, Refsnyder was promoted to the Yankees where he made his major league debut on July 11th. He handled himself very well in limited at-bats, going 13-for-43 with two homers and five RBI.

Tampa Bay Rays

Brent Honeywell - Pre-Season All-American

Brent Honeywell – Pre-Season All-American

Brent Honeywell – RHP (BA’s Rank: #3)

Honeywell attended an Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout in Kennesaw, GA in June, 2011 and was a 2013 Under Armour Pre-Season All-America Tournament participant where he showed as a solid, two-way player but on the mound is where he stood out.

Graduating in 2013 from Franklin County High School in Royston, GA, Honeywell was taken by the Rays after a season of JuCo ball, selected in the second round in 2014 out of Walters State Community College in Morristown, TN. Honeywell put together a nice first season in pro ball, starting eight games for Rookie Class Princeton, finishing with a 1.07 ERA and holding opponents to a .161 batting average. Last season, the 20-year old went a combined 9-6 with an ERA of 3.18 between Low-A Bowling Green and High-A Charlotte. His numbers were evenly split between the two levels of A-ball as he showed major consistency, starting 12 games at both with high strikeout and low walk totals.

Jake Bauers – 1B (BA’s Rank: #4)

Bauers participated in the 2013 Ryan Lemmon Invitational as a senior and is a 2013 graduate from Marina High School in Huntington Beach, CA. He was drafted in the seventh round in 2013 by the San Diego Padres and was part of the blockbuster deal that sent him to Tampa in the Wil Myers deal. He’s now a big-time prospect on Tampa Bay’s radar after a very impressive first season in the Rays organization, starting in Charlotte and a promotion to Double-A Montgomery where the slugging left-hander hit .276 with 23 extra-base hits in 69 games.

His combined .272 average and .418 slugging percentage to go along with 11 homers are impressive, even more so, according to Fangraphs, was his wRC+ (weighted runs created) an advanced batting statistic used to measure against the league average wRC+ and similar to that of OPS+. Read the full explanation of the stat here. Bauers 123 wRC+ puts him between “above average” and “great” and he did all of this in a season where he was just 19 years old.

Bauers is young and still developing his overall game (he doesn’t turn 21 until October 6th), but could jump higher in the organizational ranks very quickly in 2016. A full season being challenged at Double-A or perhaps a jump to Triple-A by mid season could be in the works if he continues his advanced hitting and develop well defensively at first base. What has been shown so far is the ability to adjust from Single to Double-A, perhaps the hardest jump in the minors.

Jacob Faria

Jacob Faria

Jacob Faria – RHP (BA’s Rank: #8)

Faria burst onto the scene in 2015, a season where the right-hander went a combined 17-4 with a 1.92 ERA between Charlotte and Montgomery levels. Facing more disciplined and experienced hitters at Double-A, Faria excelled, giving up 21 earned runs and 52 hits in 75 1/3 innings while increasing his strikeout totals (96) as well.

Faria was the Rays tenth round selection (330th overall) in 2011 out of Gahr High School in Cerritos, CA and attended an Under Armour Baseball Factory College PREP event in Costa Mesa, CA in July of 2010.

While not throwing hard, Faria has an impressive four-pitch repertoire as he learned the importance of changing speeds when making the jump to face Double-A hitters. According to his interview with MILB.com, Faria credited his development of a more consistent changeup as his “biggest pitch” and the reason he had such a successful 2015 campaign. Little known before, Faria is now front and center of a talented crop of Rays pitching prospects ready to take the next step forward.

Toronto Blue Jays

Anthony Alford

Anthony Alford

Anthony Alford – OF (BA’s Rank: #1)

Alford, a 2011 Under Armour All-American is the Jays top organizational prospect and enjoying a rebirth of sorts, playing baseball exclusively after being a highly-recruited two-sport athlete from Mississippi.

Nearly playing football at Ole Miss, Alford decided to stick with baseball and in 2015, the 6’1″, 205 pound outfielder put together his best professional season yet. Between Single-A Lansing and a jump to High-A Dunedin, Alford hit .298 with 25 doubles, seven triples, 27 stolen bases and 67 walks in 107 games. He also increased his OPS by twelve percentage points (.812 to .824) in the jump and is athletic enough to play defensively day in and day out at the center field position.

Alford could begin 2016 at Double-A to see if he can continue his ascend to join the major league club sometime in the near future.

Sean Reid-Foley – RHP (BA’s Rank: #5)

Reid-Foley jumps five spots from last year on this list after a solid 2015 season for the 6’3″, 220 pound right-hander who is the second-highest rated pitching prospect according to Baseball America.

Reid-Foley attended the 2013 Under Armour Memorial Day Classic was the Blue Jays second round selection (49th overall) in 2014 from Sandalwood High School in Jacksonville, FL. Last season between Lansing and Dunedin, Reid-Foley went a combined 4-10 but what was impressive were his strikeout totals, retiring 90 batters in just 63 1/3 innings at Lansing. He made eight starts in Dunedin after his promotion and struggled at times, finishing his season back at Lansing but it was great experience for Sean, who had only logged 22 2/3 innings the previous season, his first in professional ball.

His fastball makes hitters miss and if he can continue to develop his secondary pitches, he will make huge strides and contributions in the Jays system in 2016.
