Former Under Armour All-American, Lance McCullers, Jr. to Make MLB Debut for Astros
Former 2010 Under Armour All-American and Baseball Factory alumnus, Lance McCullers, Jr. is expected to make his major league debut for the Houston Astros tonight against the Oakland Athletics.
The 21-year-old has been outstanding in the Astros farm system this season, beginning the season with Double-A Corpus Christi, starting four games, pitching 29.0 innings with a minuscule 0.62 ERA and 43 strikeouts. He was then promoted to Triple-A Fresno, but before he could throw a pitch there, received the call to join the major league ball club.
Lance is the son of former major league reliever, Lance McCullers, who played seven seasons in the majors for the Padres, Yankees, Tigers and Rangers. McCullers, Jr. features a fastball that sits in the mid 90’s, in addition to throwing a very good sinker and changeup.
His appearance in the Under Armour All-American Game in 2010 was a notable one as he touched 97 miles per hour on his fastball and displayed an electric arm. He was then selected 41st overall in the 2012 Draft by the Houston Astros as a supplemental pick.
Astros manager A.J. Hinch told MLB.com that McCullers, Jr. was deserving of the promotion and will be able to handle the situation.
“He knows his strengths,” Hinch said. “He has a good demeanor about him. He showed that in camp. I told him to just go out and compete. His best is good enough.”
