Lodi, CA Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout Recap

The Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout Tour rolled through north-central California on Sunday, April 19, with a stop at Tony Zupo Field in Lodi. Zupo Field was formerly known as Lawrence Park, and served as the home of the Class A Lodi Crushers of the California League from 1966 to 1984. The Crushers eventually relocated south, and are now known as the Rancho Cucamonga Quake — Class A Advanced Affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

under-armour-baseball-factory-national-tryouts2017 C Christopher Troye (Heritage HS – Brentwood, CA) was easily the most talented player of the day. He stands an impressive 6-foot-4 and 210 pounds, and showed a well-rounded set of tools.

He reached 90 mph raw velocity, and got his throws off quickly to post several release times in the low 1.9 range — and as low as 1.80. His right-handed stroke produced hard line drives from gap to gap, with enough present strength to produce 83 mph exit velocity.

He’s a good athlete, capable of playing other positions — which he does now for his high school. Heritage High School has the luxury of 2016 C Jacob Cruce behind the plate along with Troye. Though not at the Lodi workout in April, Jacob Cruce earned Honorable Mention among 2016 graduates at the 2015 Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament.

2018 OF Austin Watters (Calaveras HS – San Andreas, CA) is another potentially exciting underclassmen. He has a strong, athletic build at 6-foot and 200 pounds, and showed advanced raw power along with quality hit and field tools.

A pair of switch-hitting middle infielders added some additional premium position options to this group.

2016 SS Joshua Urps (Elk Grove HS – Wilton, CA) didn’t overwhelm with measurables, but he showed the ability to handle the bat from both sides of the plate AND featured slick fielding ability with the ability to make a variety of throws.

During the workout, 2018 SS Logan Whitesides (Jesuit HS – Granite Bay, CA) showed as a more advanced offensive player at this point, but has a good foundation to build on as a defender.
